Abstrait:

In the paper the seismic design criteria for a new crossing of Ölfusá river in S-Iceland is presented. A 305 m cable stayed bridge is being planned which will have the longest bridge span in Iceland when constructed. At least 7 earthquakes with a magnitude of M6 and above have struck within 10 km from the site since 1700, including one on the 29th of May 2008 with a magnitude of 6,3 (Mw) and epicentre at 7 km distance, Seismic loads including near- fault effects and potential fault slip are described Preliminary results comparing different shapes of pylons are presented for different types of earthquake response analysis, i.e. traditional response spectrum method and time history analysis using recorded ground motions.
