Castiglione bridge is part of a new road layout project of highway 17 "Appulo-Sannitica" connecting the centre and the south of Italy from L’Aquila to Foggia. Indeed, the original design of the highway dates back to the beginning of nineteenth century, during the Napoleonic period. The viaduct connects two slopes spanning 30 meters valley, where a narrow stream runs. It is a two- span continuous girder bridge with a central pier and it has a total length of 274 m.

This paper focuses on the design and erection of the bridge that were studied in details because of the poor mechanical properties of the soil where the bridge was constructed. Indeed, the left slope is unstable and subject to a continuous slow landslide which has been underway for 10000 years.
