Abstrait: This paper presents the tests and their numerical analysis that were carried out both on the Solferino footbridge in Paris, and on a footbridge model in laboratory concerning the effects of lateral bridge motion on the behaviour of pedestrians, and the possible synchronization of crowds. It has been verified that below a certain threshold in acceleration, crowds behave randomly, and beyond, the forced synchronisation phenomenon occurs at the resonant frequency of the bridge. This can lead to very large lateral vibrations and high level of acceleration. Thus a criteria for design has been developed in order to avoid the synchronisation phenomenon. For practical purpose random crowds are modelised simply by an equivalent number of idealised single pedestrians determined empirically by means of extensive statistical calculations to reproduce the crowd effect on the bridge. Dynamic analysis can be readily performed with this model and synchronous situations are avoided by limiting the effect of random crowds to a chosen threshold value.
