Abstrait: Although openable bridge and particularly small bascule bridges have been in use since ancient times, it was not until the 1850s that engineering methods were developed that enabled moving long, heavy spans quickly and efficiently. A retractable bridge, sometimes referred to as a thrust bridge, is an opening bridge with a deck that is rolled backwards, or sideways, to open a navigation channel for water traffic. Only few examples of retractable bridges are still in existence, a great majority among them being road bridges. The competition winning Inderhavnen pedestrian / cycle bridge in Copenhagen, under construction, is the very latest addition to this select collection.
