During the 1800's important changes happened in the building and construction industry due to the Industrial Revolution. These included both civil and industrial buildings and had a particular effect upon the construction of bridges.

New architectural developments favoured the use of iron and cast iron on a large scale and there were many new techniques used to manufacture them. The use of iron in the nineteenth century allowed engineers to create new structural forms, differing from the traditional forms of bridge construction using stone and wood and the properties of metal proved to be more suitable to task of bridge building. With the increasing number of iron bridges and industrialisation, a greater variety of construction parts made of metal were produced.
