The first concrete dome in Germany? A church building using modern techniques

| Abstrait: | The double-skin, ribbed dome of the St. Ursula parish church in Munich was designed by August Thiersch and built in 1897 by the construction company Johann Odorico, Frankfurt/Main. It is an important landmark in the history of concrete and reinforced concrete construction. Above the octagonal tambour an inner, in two dimensions curved dome and an outer cloister dome with straight-lined directrix were realized. The use of concrete for the dome construction was modern but applied on the basis of brickwork design. Thiersch used hoops of reinforcement only in the tambour. In 1933 maintenance repairs were executed to strengthen both parts of the dome. |
