Abstrait:

The book titled “Footbridges – small is beautiful” [1] issued by the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) end of the year 2014 is a result of a huge work of numerous authors from 22 European countries. Their work was to undertake as comprehensive as possible a review of the achievements of human expertise in the construction of bridges specifically intended for pedestrians. This task was not chosen as random. Instead, it had a specific objective. Although footbridges are usually smaller structures (there are exceptions), their planning and execution require a great deal of expertise in the fields of both construction and architecture. Few construction projects involve such creative interaction between construction engineer and architect from the outset. At the same time creation of a nice footbridge is a challenge for both of them to express their knowledge in constructing bridges and bridge design. The book includes presentation of more than 200 footbridges built in Europe regardless of their date of construction and their size making the book more interesting. And especially the old footbridges built some centuries are telling us interesting stories. What are the stories of the famous footbridges like The Old Bridge in Mostar, The Rialto Bridge in Venice and The Hradeckega Bridge in Ljubljana? We still can learn from them and take their messages in account while designing a modern footbridge. Let us learn from the past while thinking for tomorrow.
