Abstrait:

This paper focuses on the discrepancy that may occur between finite element modelling (FEM) and on-site strain measurements. This is based on practical experience the from assessment of the Forsmo Bridge; a 263 m long and 50 m high riveted steel-truss-arch railway bridge completed in 1912. The three-dimensional FE-modelling is described and typical problems are outlined. Results from strain-gauge measurements are included. The FE-model is updated and lessons learned are described. Recommendations for modelling are given and it is concluded that on-site measurements and model updating can be crucial for assessment of sufficient accuracy.
