Abstrait: The function and the development of pedestrian bridges in Japan are described in this paper. After entering the age of motorization in the late 1950’s, modern pedestrian bridges across heavy traffic roads were first built. In the first stage of the 60’s and 70’s, quite a few number of pedestrian bridges were constructed, afterwards increased a vast number of them all over the country. During this period, they were constructed aiming to reduce the risk of traffic accidents, but severely criticized for mental and physical pains to use, and for their boring appearance. Thereafter, design of pedestrian bridges in Japan has been much improved, taking account of synthetic consideration of multiple functions and significance of aesthetics. In this paper, chronologically characteristic aspects of pedestrian bridge in our county may be divided into three periods, that is first the early stage, second the transition period, and finally the developmental period. Review on each period is made by illustrating various types of design examples.
